I am dedicated to helping each student begin and continue to find joy in music through piano lessons in my home studio, at home, or on line.

Lessons are 40 minutes long for traditional students in my home.  I am also open to in-home or online lessons, or a combination of the three.  Studio lessons  may overlap with other students’ times to combine activities with another student, or participate in "off the bench" activities as I am working with another student.   "Off the bench" activities may involve listening, composing, theory, ipad applications, or recording an assignment.

Lessons include instruction in technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, music history, performance practice, ensemble playing, composition, improvisation, and repertoire.  Instruction is centered on classical literature and technique, but other varieties of music styles are covered, and may be emphasized as desired.   These styles may include folk, popular, jazz, sacred, or modern.

I do my best to make lessons fun and engaging, and tailored to the individual student.   Students will go home each week with a sheet listing specific things to do at home.  As with any skill, the more you work on it the more you progress, so students should make an effort to make progress in their music every day.   Students should provide a three ring binder where assignments and other materials will be kept.

Group performance classes may be scheduled about once a month.  These are included with tuition.   Classes will include games and activities to reinforce concepts learned in private lessons such as ear-training, composition, ensemble playing, theory, and performance practice.  Students will have an opportunity to perform during these classes pieces they’ve been working on, as well as learn from the performances of other students.

There will be two recitals per year for parents, other family, and friends to attend.   Recitals give students an opportunity to learn and perform solo and ensemble literature in a more formal setting, with a larger audience.

Participation in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival is optional, but highly encouraged.   This is an opportunity to prepare music really well and perform for judges that will rate their performance.  I can also prepare students to participate in other local competitions or performance opportunities.
